After all, our living space is where we can kick back and forget all about the stresses and strains of our day! And this is why we should always take the time, effort and expense to make our abode as comfortable and homely as possible…

Now, interior design will normally be a whole lot easier than you realise as long as you just go about it all in the right way. Work has been very frustrating and monotonous lately. Part of my job today was to install the complete recruitment software package on all the 30 computers in the HR department. I know those of you who have high pressure jobs would be thinking what a complainer, but trust me, if you have to do the same things again and again, then it just becomes very frustrating. It’s just like eating the same food again and again, till you finally run from the very sight of it.

These are the kind of boring days when I would want to lock myself in my beautiful home. There are two reasons why I call my home beautiful, one because it’s actually beautiful and secondly because I designed it myself. Oh, don’t start thinking of me as a great interior designer; I am just a regular person, with the only difference of having the courage to try out most of things that come into my mind.

There are few things that you would need to keep in mind if you are not an interior designer by profession and still want to design your home yourself. Firstly, make sure that before you start going through the catalogues you get a pen and a paper to make note of the things that you for sure want in your home. If you are alone, this is easy, but if you live with family, then you will need to get inputs from everybody along with a bit of people management as well. Next, you can go through the catalogues and start matching the things you want and the things available in each design. Try and select a design which is very close to what you want and then you can always add the things that are not in there. If you are planning to bring in new furniture, then make sure that you measure the house and the furniture, to avoid an awkward situation. Once all this is done, you can go ahead with the builders. For confidence you can even discuss the plan with an interior designer. That’s all and you will have a house designed by yourself.

My work in the sales line ensures that I am away from home most days of the week. While travelling to meet clients and team members I usually stay in motels or inns as I just need to sleep the night before moving on. Through it all, I pine to get back home, sleep on the familiar contours of my bed, and enjoy the little things that make up our home.

The place we call home did not happen overnight. My wife and I always wanted a beautiful place we did from scratch. After traversing through all the ‘For Sale'ads for months, we finally came across what is today our cocoon. When we first saw it, we just adored the place. Only catch was that it was priced more than what we had in mind. Tight finances meant we could just about stretch and buy the place. Initially, we made do with the very bare necessities and slowly, as things improved, we started buying things for the house bit by bit. Each thing we bought was scrutinised and compared for utility and its aesthetic value before our hard earned money was put down. No roller banner ad could tempt us to buy something, unless it passed muster beyond our stringent evaluation! This dedication to buying only what we liked and enjoyed often proved to be a costly affair and meant there were very few holidays, outings or eating out. But we were more than happy to make these small sacrifices. We wanted a home we could come back to after the travails of each day to relax, unwind and enjoy what we had created.

Today our home is a place where we look forward to coming back to. All the sacrifices and hard work shows: friends and family unfailing comment on the peace and calm that emanates from our home. And I enjoy my work trips as I know I have something my wife and I enjoy when I get back!
